Overview of major immigration programs

FEDERAL SKILLED WORKER PROGRAM

Language Skills:

  • English (or French equivalent) – IELST 6.

Type/Level of Work Experience:

  • Canadian or foreign experience in 1 of these occupations: Executive/manager; Professional or Technician.

Amount of Work Experience:

  • One year continuous within the last 10 years (combination of part-time, full-time or more than 1 job in your primary occupation).

Job Offer:

  • Not required, but desirable.

Education:

  • Secondary education required. More selection points is given for post-secondary education.

CANADIAN EXPERIENCE CLASS

Language Skills:

  • English (or French equivalent) – IELST 6 if you are an Executive/Manager or Professional;
  • English or French – IELST 5 if you are a technician.

Type/Level of Work Experience:

  • Canadian experience in 1 of these types of occupations: Executive/manager; Professional or Technician. The work experience can be in 1 or all of these occupations, as long as it is consecutive.

Amount of Work Experience:

  • One year in Canada in the last 3 years, either combination of full-time or part-time work. The work experience can be in 1 or all of the occupations above, as long as it is consecutive.

Job Offer:

  • Not required, but desirable.

Education:

  • Not required, but desirable.

FEDERAL SKILLED TRADES PROGRAM

Language Skills:

  • English (or French equivalent) – IELST 5 for speaking and listening; and IELST 3.5 for reading and IELST 4 for writing.

Type/Level of work experience:

  • Canadian or foreign experience in a skilled trade in the technician category.

Amount of work experience: 

  • Two years within last 5 years (either combination of full-time or part-time work).

Job Offer:

  • A valid job-offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least 1 year; or
  • a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority.

Education:

  • Not required, but desirable.

ATLANTIC IMMIGRATION PILOT PROGRAM

Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program is a program for recent graduates from the Atlantic colleges and universities (DLIs) or for the skilled workers who agree to live and work in Atlantic provinces.

Language:

  • English or French – IELTS Listening – 4.5; IELST Reading – 3.5; IELST Writing and Speaking – 4.

Type/Level of Work Experience:

  • Canadian or foreign experience in 1 of these occupations: Executive/manager; Professional; Technician or in intermediary jobs that require on the job training or limited formal education.

Amount of Work Experience:

  • 1 year or 1560 hrs. in the last 3 years;
  • The work experience must be in 1 occupation, but can be with different employers;
  • Work experience also acquired during a period of study is allowed, as long as the work hours did not exceed what was authorized under a study permit.

Job Offer:

  • Required, from the participating employers. LMIA is not required.

Education:

  • Canadian or foreign; any level education will suffice it.

AGRI-FOOD PILOT PROGRAM

Agri-Food Pilot helps address the labour needs of the Canadian agri-food sector. The pilot provides a pathway to permanent residence for experienced, non-seasonal workers in specific industries and occupations. It will run until May 2023.

Language:

  • English or French – IELTS Listening – 4.5; IELTS Reading – 3.5; IELTS Writing and Speaking – 4.

Type/Level of Work Experience:

Canadian work experience only obtained while on Temporary Foreign Worker Program with Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) submitted in the last 12-months when hiring an employee. Work experience in 1 or more of the following occupations:

  • Meat product manufacturing (NAICS 3116):
    • NOC B 6331 – Retail butchers;
    • NOC C 9462 – Industrial butchers;
    • NOC B 8252 – Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers;
    • NOC D 9617 – Food processing labourers;
  • Greenhouse, nursery and floriculture production, including mushroom production (NAICS 1114):
    • NOC B 8252 – Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers;
    • NOC C 8431 – General farm workers;
    • NOC D 8611 – Harvesting labourers;
  • Cattle ranching and farming (NAICS 1121):
    • NOC B 8252 – Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers;
    • NOC C 8431 – General farm workers;
  • Hog and pig farming (NAICS 1122):
    • NOC B 8252 – Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers;
    • NOC C 8431 – General farm workers;
  • Poultry and egg production (NAICS 1123):
    • NOC B 8252 – Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers;
    • NOC C 8431 – General farm workers;
  • Sheep and goat farming (NAICS 1124):
    • NOC B 8252 – Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers;
    • NOC C 8431 – General farm workers;
  • Other animal production (NAICS 1129):
    • NOC B 8252 – Farm supervisors and specialized livestock workers;
    • NOC C 8431 – General farm workers.

Amount of Work Experience:

  • 1 year (1,560 hours) of non-seasonal, full-time work in the past 3 years;
  • In 1 or more of the selected occupations above.

Job Offer:

  • Job offer must be permanent and full-time.

Education:

  • Canadian or foreign high school diploma or from designated organization or professional body.

RURAL AND NORTHERN IMMIGRATION PILOT

It’s designed to spread the benefits of economic immigration to smaller communities by creating a path to permanent residence for skilled foreign workers who want to work and live in the northern parts of Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.

This program is open to the workers with qualifying work experience or to the students who have graduated from a college in the participating community.

 

Language:

  • English or French – (for Executives/managers) IELST Listening, Writing and Speaking – 5.5; IELST Reading – 5;
  • English or French – (for Professionals) IELST – 5;
  • English or French – (for Technicians or Manual Workers) IELST Listening – 4.5; IELST Reading – 3.5; IELST Writing and Speaking – 4.

Type/Level of Work Experience:

  • Canadian or foreign experience in 1 of these occupations: Executive/manager; Professional; Technician or in the intermediary jobs that require on the job training or limited formal education.

Amount of Work Experience:

  • 1 year of (continuous or interrupted) work experience for at least 1,560 hours in the past 3 years.

Job Offer:

  • Required, from a participating community. No LMIA is needed;
  • A Job offer can be at the same occupational level or +/- 1 level of the NOC code that matches your work experience. Exception: If your experience is in the manual labour force (intermediary jobs that require on the job training or limited formal education), then the job offer you are offered must be in the same “manual” occupation, too.

Education:

  • Canadian or foreign high school diploma, post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree.

HOME CHILD CARE PROVIDER & HOME SUPPORT WORKER PILOT PROGRAM

Canada created this pilot program to replace the caregiver program that suffered negative attention in the press. Only a limited number of applicants is accepted into the program, so do not hesitate to contact Arcadia today.

 

Language:

  • English or French – IELST 5.

Type/Level of Work Experience:

  • Canadian experience as Home Child-Care Provider or Home Support Worker;

Amount of Work Experience:

  • 0 experience with a condition of probationary employment;
  • 2 years in the last 3 years;
  • Canadian work experience does not need to be continuous.

Job Offer:

  • Required, but LMIA is not.

Education:

  • Canadian one-year post-secondary (or higher) educational credential.
